Parkchester

Parkchester was built by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1940 — a planned community of 12,272 apartments displayed as a scale model at the 1939 World's Fair, originally with a whites-only rental policy that was not overturned until 1968. Today it is one of the most diverse communities in the Bronx: 35% Black, 33% Hispanic, and 25.4% Asian per the 2020 census. That Asian population — predominantly Bangladeshi, Pakistani, and Indian, concentrated along Starling Avenue — has specific home care needs that most agencies in the Bronx cannot meet. By 2009, approximately 8,000 Bangladeshi families lived in the Bronx, with a significant portion in Parkchester, and that community has grown substantially since. Elderly South Asian parents often speak Urdu, Bengali, or Hindi but not English — and receiving nursing instructions, medication guidance, or wound care explanations in a language you do not fully understand is dangerous.
