Co-op City was built on the former site of Freedomland USA — an amusement park the size of Disneyland that drew millions of visitors from 1960 to 1964 before financial collapse. The United Housing Foundation bought the marshland site and completed the world's largest housing cooperative in 1973. The original residents who moved in — over 70% Jewish when the development opened, many relocating from the Grand Concourse — are now in their 80s and 90s. They are the generation Good Care Agency most directly serves in Co-op City. With over 8,300 residents aged 60 or older and 15,372 residential units across 35 high-rise towers, Co-op City is the largest naturally occurring retirement community in the United States. It has no nearby subway. Its residents depend on express buses, and for an 85-year-old managing heart failure, diabetes, or recovering from a hip replacement, getting to an outpatient clinic is a significant undertaking. Our nurses, aides, and therapists come to them instead — directly to their tower apartments, with Russian, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Tajik, Spanish, and English-speaking staff matching the full linguistic spectrum of this community. For Jewish survivors of the Holocaust living in Co-op City, our Holocaust Survivors Program provides dignified, culturally sensitive care from staff who understand both the language and the history.
